Usain Bolt: The man with lightning speed

Usain Bolt, the only person who holds a ‘triple treble’ Olympic record, is currently the fastest man alive. The Jamaican sprinter is the first person to hold the 100 meters and 200 meters world records. His popularity worldwide soared with his victory at the two individual sprint events in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bolt won 9 Olympic medals at three consecutive Olympics – Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016. He won these in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100 meters relay events.

Once Gandhiji asked, ‘What is hockey?’

In 1932 Los Angeles Olympics there were three teams, India, Japan and the USA, in men’s hockey. India won the gold by defeating Japan and USA respectively by 11–1 and 24–1. When it came to raising funds for sending the team to Los Angeles, a journalist representing the Indian Hockey Federation approached Mahatma Gandhi to issue an appeal to the masses. Gandhiji’s only reply was, ‘What is hockey?’

How pure are Olympic gold medals?

The Olympic gold medals are mostly made of silver, not gold. Only six grams, or 0.19 ounce, of gold is required to coat the medal. The medal itself is made of 92.5 per cent or 550 grams of pure silver. The medals are usually circular with a diameter of a minimum of 60 mm and a thickness of a minimum of 3 mm. These specifications are as per the Olympic Charter. The last time a pure gold medal was awarded in the 1912 Olympics in Sweden.
